Review: Ibis Hotel, Phuket

 November 24, 2010

Hi lovelies,

Here's my review on another hotel in Phuket. Last time i reviewed a hotel in Patong district. So, what's next? :)

swimming pool area, view from my room

Location:  located at Kata district, near Kata beach but since its opposite ClubMed (the one that directly face the beach), u need to go around ClubMed first to reach the beach.  Plenty of shop & restaurant nearby.

hotel lobby

Price: RM105 (booked through Agoda.com – green season) normal price would starts from RM150 - booking through hotel website (depends on currency exchange rate)

 simple room.. but comfortable enough
small room. note the small wardrobe & balcony

Room condition: cozy small room (comfortable enough for me, just to get some sleep after a long day out), spotless, LCD TV, small wardrobe (it’s not a big problem to me since I only brought a backpack), basic toiletries provided (better bring on your own), very small balcony (just fit two medium-seized people), mini fridge, coffee making facilities, safety deposit box, wi-fi (payable)

 clean bathroom
basic toiletries

Facilities: swimming pool, internet corner, motorbike rental, transport service etc

drinking water.. nice bottles! :)

Breakfast: didn’t take breakfast there, therefore I cannot comment much on it

Extra: check in was fast and they are kind enough to let me in early (since I had an early flight – managed to check in around 10 am). Basically this is a new hotel so every facility is relatively new & convenient store is just in front of the hotel

Review: Aspery Hotel, Patong

 November 23, 2010

Hi there,

Here's my second review. This is where i stayed when i was at Patong, Phuket.  Spent a night there. Such a lovely small hotel. Looking forward to visit Phuket again! Definitely a nice place for quick gate away :)

the spacious and comfy room

Location:  about 500m to Patong beach, quite central, plenty of shops nearby (laundry, food stalls - and the well-known Thai-Malaysia restaurant 'Kusuma Seafood', convenient stores, spa, travel agent booth, money changer, tailor etc)

Price: MYR130-150(booking made through Agoda.com - green season), MYR200 (through hotel - green season, max MYR390 - peak season) -- depends on currency exchange rate

Room condition: Deluxe – spacious! Clean, comfortable (Thailand is famous for its hard bed, but then.. still comfy to me), day bed, LCD TV with DVD player, large bathroom (with bath tub – the hot water tap at the bath tub was not working when i was there. no big fuss though, still can use the shower), big wardrobe, small balcony, one door fridge, coffee making facilities, safety deposit box

toiletries
shower, rack for extra pillows and towel

Facilities: swimming pool at the rooftop, spa & massage centre attached to the hotel, motorbike rental, internet corner, airport transfer etc

Breakfast: menu are simple and yet very tasteful

Extra: they provide welcome drinks, which was very thoughtful! :)

Phuket Trip 2010: Part 2

 August 7, 2010

DISCLAIMER: This is a VERY LONG  post (my longest post... so far :p).... So please bear with the long (@very common @boring @confusing) story.

So, here i am :)

I'm back with the lame story of my Phuket trip... hehehe

 my favorite pix! :)

So, basically after spending some time at Kata and Karon we moved to Patong (acclaimed as the most happening place in Phuket)

Well, Patong is a small town which you can cover the whole area in a  half day. 'Ladyboys' (or transgendered) are everywhere. Sometimes i got confused to differentiate them from normal women. Is it that bad? Yeahhhh.. Definitely! But one thing for sure, most of them love to dress daringly especially the 'beautiful' ones. So that's one point to differentiate them (sorry, i don't have any picture of them.. too scared to come near... mereka sgt daring, lagi2 kalau nampak ade lelaki.. x kesahlaa kalau ade gak perempuan jalan same.. sure diaorg tegur gak)

Anyway, if you love beach activities like jet skiing, paragliding , etc... do come to Patong and experience the hype people talked about.

Early morning @ Patong beach

happening beach

Patong is happening indeed.. especially at the beach area and Bangla road. Other parts seemed normal and can be very peaceful at night. Do walk around at night and you'll see sort of entertainment there. It's fun to watch Patong nightlife.

Well, since we don't like the clubs.. we went to Hard Rock Cafe instead (okay,  i am just 'good' girl type. i don't dare to watch the ping pong show or whatsoever show that is everywhere in Patong). Overall, the performance at Hard Rock was great. They even sang 'Nobody' song by Wondergirls. My fav! ***clap.. clap*** :)

 The big guitar

The facade

So, besides the beach and the nightlife... where else to go? Phuket Fantasea! It's one of the main attraction in Phuket. The entrance fee is quite pricey since it is complimentary with the show or banquet dinner (you can opt for both as well depending on your budget preferences).

Phuket Fantasea. Another must-visit place in Phuket

At the entrance

Anyway, you can find lots of halal food around Phuket Fantasea area (i guess the majority of the population at that area is Muslim). We even had the chance to experience the night market there (macam pasar malam kat sini jugak). We were jumping of joy looking at the foods. Glorious foooood.... magical foood.... (okay, that's me singing the Ice Age song :p) We've been restricting our  diet only to seafood and bread for the first few days of our trip (especially when in Kata since it was quite hard to find halal restaurant there). So without hesitation we bought as much food as we can. Chicken? Beef? You name it.... huhu. That was awesome... and the best part of it? Most of the people there conversed in Thai with me! Do i look like a Thai girl? hehehe :p (okay, i do have Thai ancestry but i'm not good with the language... so i end up using English with them. Sometimes it does felt weird -- looking at the similarities we had, but then we still use foreign language to understand each other)

By the way, we passed by Kalim beach on our way to Phuket Fantasea. So we decided to stop by and enjoyed the view. Nice isn't it? :)

Kalim beach

Another view of Kalim beach

What else that we did during our stay? We went to Jungceylon Shopping Center!  I think it's the biggest mall in Phuket (the fact that it is the biggest in Patong? hehehe). CDs are relatively cheap.. and there are plenty of fast food chain. But then, we end up with McD's Fillet O Fish only since we were not sure with the halal status (it was then on our way back to KL we found out that most of the fast foods are halal since half of Phuket's population  is Muslim. ***sigh*** If only we knew it earlier.. We must be eating like hell :p)

At Jungceylon, facial massage outlets are everywhere and each offered great deal.  Spotted 3 outlets there -- Hanako, Omare and Takashi

Jungceylon :)

We went to Hanako for face massage (but not the one inside Jungceylon.. went to the branch at Rat-U-Thid road). Tried the blackhead removal... damn, it hurts till we cried! I repeat... WE! Definitely i am not the only one who cannot endure the pain during the process :p Overall, it's a good experience and the price is definitely cheap. They even gave free light make up for ladies after the massage :)
HANAKO

Extra tips?

  • Tuk-tuk is quite expensive. If you know how to ride a motorcycle, do not hesitate to rent one. It's cheap and traveling by motorcycle really add the fun. The rental rate is around THB200-350 for daily use
  • Don't forget to try Kusuma Seafood (situated near Patong road junction -- close by Club Andaman). Their Tom Yam is the best! Opens from 4 PM onwards.
  • Foot and body massage are abundant... but choose carefully. Sometimes it come with 'extra' package :p
  • ATM  machines are everywhere. Money changers too. So don't worry about withdrawing or exchanging money.
  • Travel agent, laundry and tailor are scattered everywhere too (i didn't know that Phuket is famous for their tailor made suits until i reached there)

Tuk-tuk

As for the hotels, we stayed at Ibis Hotel Kata and Aspery Hotel Patong. Both are new hotels. They have balcony too. Well, i took few weeks to decide on the hotels. Does it sound like a fussy person? heheh.. Nope.. I'm not fussy, but i'm a detail person :p

(i should make this short, so i give ratings and brief comments instead of full review okay)

Ibis Hotel

Location - 3/5 - near shop lots... need to walk a bit to get to the beach
Cleanliness - 5/5 - spotless!
Room space - 3/5 - a little bit cramp.. but comfy enough
Facilities - 4/5 - nice swimming pool, provide internet area but u need to pay for the service
Entertainment - 3/5 - small LCD TV with few local channels. we watched Transformers but we only enjoyed Megan Fox hotness since they dubbed it in Thai. We cannot understand what we were listening to. Well, most of English movies were dubbed to Thai  :p
F&B -3/5 - mini fridge with 2 bottles of drinking water.. plus some tea and coffee. couldn't say much about the foods since we didn't took our breakfast there
Service - 4/5 - check in and check out was fast. they even gave us to check in early (we arrived at 10 am)

Ibis Hotel, Kata

Aspery Hotel

Location - 4/5 - Patong beach is just a stone away. Near shop lots, travel agent booths, laundry, tailor, ATM, money changer, massage centers and food courts (where Kusuma situated)
Cleanliness - 4/5 - clean enough for me
Room space - 5/5 - very spacious (at least for me... unless nk buat sesi kejar megejar dalam bilik tue... memanglaa x muat kan). Plus point --- big wardrobe and bathtub! :)
Facilities - 2/5 - They have small swimming pool on the rooftop. Internet room is also available near the lobby
Entertainment - 4/5 - bigger LCD TV than Ibis. They provide DVD player too.
F&B - 4/5 - one door fridge with complimentary mineral waters and coffee making facilities. nice breakfast buffet
Service - 4/5 - they provide welcome drinks to every customer. Very thoughtful isn't it? They offered low rental rate for motorcycle (they even gave the bike with full tank -- unlike the one we rented at Ibis). We also left our luggage for them to take care  (we came a little bit early for check in, so we left our luggage and moved around Patong first)

Okay.. i think that's all i have in mind. I really hope for a next visit since i didn't have the chance to do island hopping. Next time.... definitely next time! hehehe (if only duit berkepuk2 dalam poket kan ;p)

Till then.

Have a great weekend!

Phuket Trip 2010: Part 1

 August 3, 2010

ALERT: THIS POST IS LOADED WITH PICS AND DEFINITELY COMES WITH A LONG STORY FOR YOU TO READ! :p

ENJOICE!

The trip started with a little bit of chaos since we overslept. Our flight was at 7.25am but we woke up at 6 without proper packing on the night before (saye flat sbb kepenatan yg x tahu berpunca dari mana. Nak sambung packing lagi.. bersiap lagi.. then nak drive from KL to LCCT amik mase brp minit lak? giler kan). We rushed to the airport and luckily we managed to check in (i think we already late for 10-15 mins.. but thank God the AA officer still allow us to check in). Fuhh!! okay, enough of the running scene at the airport ;p

The view from my seat... we are reaching Phuket. Yuhuuuu :)

Anyway, we even took our breakfast onboard since i left the food stocks at home (see... i told you it was a chaos. total chaos! penat je borong mknn, last2 tinggal jugak. selamat x tertinggal passport and tickets.. kalau tak naya je). The best part of our flight? The view of the skies in early morning.... and the landing process! very smooth :)

Arrival..  The airport is at the seaside. Feeling excited already :p

They provide FREE simcard at the arrival hall. Do take one.. it will be very useful throughout your trip

Basically, our first day is about getting used to the transportation system in Phuket :)

Prior the departure, we decided to take the bus from the airport to town and then rent a car to move around (since i thought it is good to try something challenging.. tapi saye je kot yg suke cari jalan susah. hehehe). But since we arrived quite early, we had to change the plan. There are few choices besides taking bus. You can hop on a minivan (will be shared with few other passengers) or you can get personal car that will send you directly to your destination. Airport taxi might be a little bit pricey, unless you are very good at bargaining (seriously, i am not good at it... huhu). Well, at last we agreed to take a car from the airport since the driver offered us a charge of THB650 to go to Kata (i think the price is  quite reasonable since usual rate will be around THB800 -- what i've read from other bloggers). Our driver Chareef (pronounced as Syarif among typical Muslim in Malaysia) even offered to drive along Patong and Karon so that we can look around before we travel on our own. His car is a new Toyota Altis (definitely cannot give negative comment on the car's condition -- it's very comfy. I nearly fell asleep otw to Kata but since i am very excited, i decided to stay awake to enjoy the scene). Chareef is very reliable and punctual, he  also speaks good English. We even booked him to send us to the airport on our last day. He charged THB600 from Patong, whereby our hotel charged THB750 for the same trip. We know we can get cheaper rate around Patong, but it's not easy to look for one. Besides, we already felt comfortable with him.

We went to Kata area on the 1st day since we decided to cover Kata and Karon area first. We stayed at Hotel Ibis, opposite ClubMed (will give the review on the next post)

So, what do we do on our first day?

We went to see the most renown temple in Phuket -- Wat Chalong

The main building

Sacred gate? :)

Half part of this building is under renovation

We did some shopping at Wat Chalong since we heard that the price for souvenirs are much expensive at the beaches area. Try to bargain as much as u can (since i'm not good at at it.. i just pay at whatever price that i thought reasonable).

After our visit to Wat Chalong we went to Chalong Pier. Our initial plan was to have our lunch there but since we couldn't find any halal restaurant there, we went to hypermarket nearby and bought some bread, tuna and juices for lunch. We added some cereals and milk in our cart since the breakfast for the next day did not included in our room package (we bought the room without breakfast. it came out super cheap compared to the published rate! kudos to Agoda).

Chalong Pier -- where most of the tourist boat took off for trip to other islands

HomePro Village Phuket -- where we bought our food supply

After we finished our lunch, we headed to Karon View Point (i think it is situated in Kata district, but i don't know why the name refer to Karon)

Karon View Point -- where you can see 3 main beaches in Phuket (Patong, Karon and Kata)

Then we headed to Promthep Cape (famous as Sunset View Point). We stopped by Nai Harn beach before we continue our journey to the cape.

Nai Harn Beach -- a little bit secluded. Not many people here. The water is clear but the beach area is not so clean

Crystal clear water

Evening @ Nai Harn

Promthep Cape -- where we had our dinner while watching the sunset. Very overwhelming ;)

Sunset view

We got back to our hotel before 8 PM. We cleaned ourselves, got some rest then went out for another dinner (or should i say supper?). Well, there's nothing much you can do at night while in Kata. If you want to taste a happening nightlife you better stay in Patong :D

The symbol of Thailand = Elephant (its everywhere). I found these at Promthep Cafe. Cute isn't it? :)

So, there goes our first day. What happened next day? We strolled along Karon and Kata beach. The wind was strong and the wave is quite high. Most of the time we saw red or yellow flag is on. So we do not dare to swim. We just played around, soaked our feet and kept ourselves busy with the cameras :p

Get ready for some tanning ;)

Early morning @ Karon beach

Karon... it's a beautiful beach :)

Kata beach

So.. that's it for the first part. I will continue the next part with our days in Patong. Stay tune......

Till then :)
